Moving towards a unified community

KwaThema – Residents of Phomolo Section in KwaThema are showing ubuntu amongst each other by helping each other in times of need.

They have started a burial committee which will assist bereaved residents with donations that will go towards the funeral.

According to Dave More, chairman of Helping Hands, the street committee was established in 2012 after a family in the area lost two of its members at the same time.

This was a challenge for the family as they didn’t have the financial aid to fund both funerals.

“We then as residents decided to contribute whatever we could to assist our neighbour so they could be able to go ahead with the funerals.

“From there on we saw that this was a good initiative and we formed our committee so we may assist each other as neighbours and community members and stop looking to our councillors and community leaders for assistance,” explains More.

Each street has a representative who is responsible for collecting a sum of R10 from each household. The money is then combined and sent to the bereaved family.

Pastor Mxolisi Gxowa explains the importance of having such forums in the community so that neighbour relations and community upliftment takes place.

“The little we are contributing goes a long way for each family because our circumstances differ from one family to another.

“We want to encourage other communities and areas in KwaThema to adopt such an initiative so we may be a community that cares and loves each other,” he says.
