Bringing services closer to the people

KwaThema - Work is currently in progress to create a bigger and better Selope Thema Clinic.

Situated in Extension Three, Masibeni Street this new structure being constructed next to the existing health centre will make it possible to assist more patients of this ward and surroundings areas, as the current Selope Thema clinic is too small.

“The project of the new structure which was started last year June, will serve as an additional structure to the existing clinic currently being used by patients and staff.

“We began the project on empty land close to the clinic but have already passed the halfway mark with work that has been done,” says spokesman on the site, Clive Reid.

As things stand, he explains that the foundation work is done and they are busy with the erection of the roof for the entire structure though about 40% of it is complete, 80% of the brick work has been done, about 80% of plastering is complete, 75% of concrete work is done and road work is 70% complete.

Finishing on the inside of the new structure, which encompasses among other things painting and tiling, is scheduled to begin next week.

“The new clinic structure will boast of three wings, which include the consulting room, service rooms and facilities for staff.

“There will further be two garages for the mobile clinics and new fencing to be erected around both the old and new structure.

“We will then also do an assessment on the old structure to see what needs to be fixed to give that side of the clinic a fresh look,” he adds.

Reid says the stipulated completion date is next February as they were given 18 months to complete the project.

Ward 77 Clr Wilson Busakwe shares that about 30 local people from in and around the ward have already benefited by being employed to work on the project.

He adds that previously the Selope Thema Clinic couldn’t accommodate all people in the ward due to its size as the ward keeps developing and more people are coming in.

“This is great progress for the KwaThema as it will help in bringing services closer to our people.

“We have households in the area, so we hope this clinic will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week like the KwaThema Clinic, and judging from how it looks, we believe it will be of a good standard to do this.

“This way people of this ward won’t have to go far to get medical assistance,” he says.
