Police issue winter safety tips

KwaThema - The local police have asked residents in the area to be wary so that they can remain safe at all times during winter.

Police spokesman W/O David Maphali says that during this time of year, they have seen crime increasing as nights are longer, days are shorter and most people prefer staying indoors.

“When it is cold people should ensure that they are more cautious when using candles and braizers, plus switch them off and then take the braizer outside before going to sleep because it doesn’t help keeping it inside then opening the windows or doors as that attracts criminals.

“Avoid walking alone early in the morning or at night. Instead women should ask their partners to accompany them to the bus stops where there are other people, or they should walk with other people in groups,” advises Mphali.

He adds that police officers will be deployed to parts of KwaThema to check various hot spots in the area.

“Cyclists should refrain from wearing dark clothing; instead wear clothes that are light in colour and which have reflectors.

“Drivers must also be responsible, alert and don’t go over the 60km speed limit in residential areas as there are a lot of reckless driving and hit and run cases reported during this time of year.

Tavern and pub owners should be warned as well that there will be more planned raids this winter because some of the them are operating beyond the stipulated trading hours, which then adds to the crime problems we have,” he adds.

The police are also encouraging residents to add on extra security measures to their homes as there is always an increase in house break-ins and house robberies during winter.

“It is important for residents to make sure that they get involved in sector forums as these people patrol regularly and are more vigilant with what is happening in the area.

“We tend to see a lot more common and armed robberies in winter, so avoid walking in dark or quiet areas, especially when you are alone,” he emphasises.
