CHANCE has a new executive board

The home, which accommodates orphans, abused and abandoned children, is in need of refurbishment and sponsorship, so the children at the home can be raised in a safe and comfortable environment, just like their peers.

Newly appointed chairman Adv Phillip Mokoena says he was touched and concerned by the sight of deprived children in the country, who are homeless, without proper education and proper nurturing and care.

“I had to ask myself: what is it, little as it may be, that I can do in order to better the lives of these children and to plough back into the society and community,” he explains.

“The answer, to me, was to play an active role in an orphanage such as CHANCE, by dedicating my time and resources to these less privileged children who are in need.”

Mokoena’s deputy is Dorcas Mahlangu, who will also be responsible for the portfolio of employees.

Jabulile Khoza is the treasurer and heads the fund-raising audit, and Thandi Magaoga will be in charge of the portfolio for children.

Solomon Gwavu will head maintenance and security, while Pauline Mageza heads the portfolio for housekeeping.

Pastoral care and the fathering programme will be headed by Adriaan Oosthuyzen. Banele Theledi will be involved in the children’s scholastic progress and career development, and Magda Reed will take the secretarial chair.

The home is facing a number of challenges, such as funding, sponsorship, proper facilities and transportation, and the board has outlined strategies and programmes to address the issues.

An open day is scheduled for June, when community members, stakeholders, church leaders, politicians and the business sector will be alerted to the plight of these children, with the sole purpose of generating awareness and sponsorship to benefit the interests of the children and the home.

“This day is, indeed, very close to my heart, as I believe that a lot of positive gains may be achieved,” adds Mokoena.
