Ward 77 problems get dealt with

KwaThema - To ensure safer storm water drainage systems are in place in the area, work is presently being done in Extension Two.

Receiving the much-needed enclosure of the drains with concrete slabs are Marule, Sam Ngema and September streets as well as a passageway leading to Jiyane Street, says the supervisor of Bophelong Construction, Maria Masinga.

This construction company took over the project in February from previous work done by Moseme Construction.

Ward 77 Clr Wilson Busakwe explains that the storm water drains had been open for a while, but were causing problems and concerns for the community.

He says residents were complaining that these drainage systems were dangerous as children play inside them, criminals were stealing things and hiding them there and sometimes drivers of cars would get into accidents and fall into them, while during heavy rains water would sometimes have snakes in it.

“Since things are done according to the budget of the city, the project previously had to stop. However it will now continue until all problematic storm water drains in the ward are covered with concrete slabs.

“Another immense problem we were facing was that people were dumping rubbish inside the drainage systems, which caused blockage, leaving water to be unable to flow out, so the workers are first cleaning the drains before placing the slabs on the drains,” says Busakwe.
