John Dube residents take to the streets

Duduza – After numerous public meetings and complaints laid before their leaders, residents of John Dube took to the streets, marching to the Duduza Customer Care Centre (CCC) to deliver a memorandum of their grievances.

On Tuesday residents were adamant that they want change in their community, which they claim is not even recognised in Ekurhuleni.

The high presence of EMPD officials made sure the march was peaceful and no vandalism took place.

Number one on their list was the issue of deteriorating houses and lack of tarred roads in the area.

Resident Sibusiso Sibanyoni expressed his disappointment and frustration with local government who are not available to listen to their grievances or give them proper service delivery.

“The houses we live in are cracked and collapsing, we are not safe in our homes.

“We spend a lot for transportation to get to work because taxis refuse to come into John Dube because there aren’t any tarred roads,”said Sibanyoni.

What worries many parents is the distance their children have to walk to get to school every day.

“Schools are very far from us, our children have to pass through open velds and cross busy roads to get to school,” adds Thembi Nkosi, another resident.

Residents want to meet with relevant departments so they may get answers to their questions.

On the memorandum of demands, the community requested a clinic, a school, tarred roads and transportation for primary school learners.

To receive the memorandum were the MMC of Corporate and Shared Services, Queen Duba and Duduza CCC manager, Isaac Bangilizwe, who said they would respond in seven days.

“We hope they will come up with solutions to our problems because we are tired of protesting for the very same issues for so many years,” said Ike Mogale, a resident.
