Mkhondwani wants answers

Duduza – Cleopas Mkhondwani (73), a Duduza resident is seeking answers, as tombstones belonging to his family members are among those which have collapsed due to trees that were cut down and fell onto them.

Mkhondwani says he saw the matter last week Monday when he was at the Jim Fouche Park Cemetery, situated near the stadium in Nigel, to pay his respects to his grandfather and great grandmother.

He goes on to explain that his great grandmother Nozibele Mkhondwani was buried in this cemetery in 1938 while his grandfather Amos Mkhondwani was buried in 1929.

The family then erected tombstones in 1965 to restore dignity to the resting place of their two deceased family members.

“People who were buried here years ago use to lived in Visage Park before they were moved to Arla Park and Duduza.

“Now it seems as though the trees were cut down some time last year.

“Why have these people not removed the trees and who is expected to pay for the damages to these tombstones because we as the families already spent money to have them erected,” he says.

Mkhondwani believes that the families should not be responsible for paying for the damages and would like to see this area cleaned and the broken down tombstones fixed.

“Now I have to call the family and see how we deal with this matter.

Questions have been sent to the Ekurhuleni Metro regarding the matter, but there has been no response yet.
