IEC reminds voters about last registration weekend

The community will have a second chance and final time to register to vote in the upcoming municipal elections between 8am and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Kate Bapela, IEC spokesperson, says voters only need to register once, unless they move within South Africa or the voting district boundaries change.

Who can register:

  • A South African citizen
  • Only vote from age 18
  • A smart card ID
  • Have a green bar-coded ID book, or valid temporary identity certificate
  • Register within South Africa.

Rumours have it that voters have to provide proof of residence when visiting their voting registrations. However, Bapela denies such allegations.

“You don’t need to provide proof of your address when you register, update or change your registration details, but voters should at least know their physical address to enable election officials to establish if you are registered in the correct voting district,” she says.

These address details will be captured on the registration form when voters register and will be included in the voters’ roll.
