Youth show off their skills

KwaThema – Former learners of Kwathema Skills School recently showed off their hair and beauty skills.

Bongani Zozo and Tshepo Makoe have both completed courses in hair and beauty training at the school.

Zozo is a hairstylist while Makoe is a beauty therapist who offers manicures, eyelashes and facials.

“I love what I do, and plan on doing it on a more professional platform in future,” says Zozo.

During the December holidays, both young boys gained more practical experience by rendering their services to family and friends.

Makoe explains that most young men, like himself, think the beauty industry is mainly for women, but that’s the wrong perception that people have.

“I want to inspire other young people like myself to go get training and explore the beauty industry,” says Makoe.

Shaun Unterslak from Unemployed Needs Transformation (UNT) says they started working with learners at the school last year November, where they gave the learners training in hair and beauty therapy.

“The aim of our project is to ensure that the learners are able to make a living and sustain themselves after acquiring skills.

“It is crucial for them to get firsthand experience by continuing with what they are doing after leaving school,” he says.

After the training given by UNT, learners received Sector Education Training Authority (SETA) accredited certificates.

“We will be issuing learners with starter kits in the near future so they are able to hone their skills,” adds Unterslak.

In the mean time, Unterslaks pleads that local salon owners should mentor these learners so they may gain experience in the industry and are kept busy.

Interested salon owners may contact Unterslaks on 072 517 5364.
