Dumping site gives off a stench

KwaThema – A dumping site right next to their homes is what residents of KwaThema, Extension 4 have to deal with.

For over five years the residents have watched Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) trucks drop off tons and tons of waste, which gives off an unbearable stench.

Residents claim they have been complaining to the relevant departments about this problem.

Meta Tseke, a resident, says they are not comfortable in their own homes as they have to close the windows even in hot conditions so that insects may not enter their homes.

“When we cook, flies flock into our kitchens and pots, which is not hygienic at all.

“No one can live with so many flies in their home,” she says.

Residents further claim that the stench is also hazardous to children and residents who have chest problems.

They allege that at first the metro used to use chemicals so that no stench was given off by the waste, but recently it had not been doing that.

“Our children are getting sick, there is no way that one cannot get sick when inhaling a stench that is given off by rotting waste,” points out Duduzile Mali, another resident.

Mali continues to say that if the metro fails to spray every day so that the stench subsides, then they must close the dumping site.

Ward Clr Shadow Shabangu says he wasn’t aware that residents had this complaint.

“I will go and investigate the matter and will get back to the African Reporter,” says Shabangu.
