Kiddle – a safer search engine for children

A new search engine for children, designed to be safer than other available options, has recently been launched for internet browsing and it goes by the name of Kiddle.

This web browser doesn’t allow children to search ‘bad words’ and blocks foul language.

While it may not be foolproof, it is a safer means for children to browse the internet and may bring parents some peace of mind.

Kiddle looks very much like Google, however, shared features aside, Kiddle.co is not a Google product.

On Kiddle’s home page are the words ‘Visual search engine for children, powered by editors and Google safe search’.

Words can be added to the Kiddle keyword block form, while sites can be added to the site-blocking form, making Kiddle even more child-friendly.

If a child types an unacceptable word or phrase, the search engine returns a message saying the query cannot be accommodated.

More about Kiddle:

Safe search

Sites appearing in Kiddle search results satisfy family-friendly requirements, as sites with explicit or deceptive content are filtered.

Child-oriented results

Below is how Kiddle returns results for each query (in the order shown):

Safe sites and pages written specifically for children, hand-picked and checked by Kiddle editors, are typically results one to three.

Safe, trusted sites that are not written specifically for kids but have content written in a simple way, easy for children to understand, hand-picked and checked by Kiddle editors are typically results four to seven.

Safe, famous sites that are written for adults, providing expert content, but are harder for kids to understand and filtered by Google safe search are typically results eight and higher.

Big thumbnails

Most Kiddle search results are illustrated with big thumbnails, which makes it easier to scan the results, differentiate between them and click the most appropriate results to the query.

Thumbnails serve as visual clues and are beneficial to children as they don’t read as fast as adults.

  • Large Arial font in Kiddle search results provides better readability for children.
