KwaThema floods over weekend
KwaThema – Various sections in KwaThema have been reported to have flooded on Sunday, following a storm that took place in the afternoon.
Ward 77 councillor Wilson Busakwe along with the KwaThema Customer Care Centre Manager Andres Nkabinde, Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services Bheki Mazibuko, SAPS, EMPD, Springs Constituency Office and some members of the community visited these affected homes.
Councillor Busakwe says some of the affected areas included Extension 1, Nyanyatho, Extension 3, Extension 4, Vlakfontien Road and Barcelona. Therefore, he will ask municipality workers to be sent to clean the storm water drains in these areas.
He adds that his office will also compile a report so that the relevant departments can go and assist in part of his ward that have been hit badly by the storm, as other areas had already been helped.
One of the sections that experienced the most amount of damage reported in this ward is Radebe Street in Barcelona, where more than five houses sustained some damage because as rain and wind intensified, electrical cables fell over houses while zinc sheet roofing from some houses blew off.
One of the people recovering from the disaster is 89-year-old Lizah Mkhonza whose roofing blew off during the rain.
“I live alone and when the storm got worse there was nothing I could do as it kept raining harder and I just saw my roof blow off.
“My furniture got damaged and some of the rooms were flooded with water,” she says.
Some of gogo Mkhonza’s neighbours were helpful and assisted her on Monday to restore the roof, which she says she is grateful for.
One of the woman living at the gogo’s yard, Thandekile Nhlapho swept the water out while neighbours Vusi Thobela and Vusi Mbatha fixed the zinc sheet roofing, saying gogo Mkhonza is old, lives alone and needed help, hence they decided to come and assist her.
