Local awarded scholarship

Duduza – On Monday Duduza resident Tumelo Pailane was awarded a bursary from the Peermont Education Trust (PET) at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park.

Pailane, who matriculated at M O M Seboni Secondary School in Duduza, achieved seven distinctions in his National Senior Certificate.

After many interviews with a panel of judges, Pailane and 12 other lucky candidates were awarded the scholarship amongst hundreds of applicants.

The bursaries will see the candidate’s tuition and accommodation costs paid and he will also receive psychological support to sustain them through the academic year.

Trust manager, Jenny Findlay says “over the years we have found that we are able to increase our graduation rate by offering learners additional support throughout the year.

“We do not just leave them to their own devices.

“To this end the trust has an 86% graduation rate.

“This is exceptional, considering that learners are from township schools.”

The PET has afforded the 13 youngsters an opportunity of a lifetime as they are from previously disadvantaged areas.

Pailane will be studying for a B.Sc Industrial Engineering at Wits University in Johannesburg this year.
