Mentally disabled woman traumatised after rape

KwaThema - A 41-year-old mentally unstable woman was recently allegedly gang-raped by two suspects in Tlakula Street, Highland, KwaThema.

The woman’s neighbour noticed a man, known to the neighbour, taking the woman to her room, closing the door behind them.

W/O David Mphali, KwaThema police spokesman, says the neighbour went to investigate and knocked on the door.

“When he asked for permission to enter the room, one of the suspects asked him to wait for 10 minutes,” says Mphali.

The neighbour waited for about 20 minutes before he kicked the door down to enter the room.

While talking to the suspect known to him, he noticed movement under a blanket.

Mphali says the neighbour pulled the blanket from the bed and witnessed another suspect raping the woman.

The two suspects fled the scene and the neighbour immediately called the police.

“The community caught the two suspects within minutes of the crime while they were trying to hide between the houses,” says Mphali.

Two suspects, aged 21 and 39 years, were assaulted by the community and were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

They had allegedly spotted the woman while she had come out from her room.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A case of rape was opened at the police station.

Mphali appeals to the community not to take the law into their own hands by assaulting suspects, but once they apprehend a suspect to rather call the police.
