Asser Maloka fails over 100 learners

Duduza - It is alleged that more than 100 Grade Eight learners from Assor Maloka Secondary School, in Duduza, failed Grade Eight for the second time last year.

This shocking performance has raised the eyebrows of parents and residents of the community.

Esther Mbonani, a parent, says she is concerned about the rate of Grade Eight failures in the school and that something needs to be done urgently.

“The school and the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) need to derive a plan of action, because it is not normal for a large number of learners to be repeating a grade,” she says.

“As parents, we are really devastated and need answers and change at the school; we are not sure who is to blame for such results, we need the department to assist in finding a solution.”

GDE acting spokesperson Oupa Bodibe says it is true that there are learners repeating Grade Eight for the second time, however, the examination and assessment team at the school and the district are addressing the matter.

“There are some learners who have already been progressed to Grade Nine,” Bodibe adds.

He further says the principal confirms that this process is currently taking place at the school.

“The school governing body and the parents of learners who have failed the grade for the second time are being consulted.

“The district assessment team will verify the allegations regarding issues of learners repeating the same grade three times,” says Bodibe.

He adds that the department will continue to explore all possible avenues to assist these learners.
