Art gives youngster hope

Tsakane – Mpumelelo Dube (21), a resident of Tsakane, says his love for drawing is something he gets from his father and he holds it dear to his heart after it helped him recover from a difficult time in his life.

“My father use to draw diagrams of speakers before fixing them and I use to sit and watch him.

“Later on in my life I came across and fell in love with animation.

“In 2012, due to illness and being in hospital for some time, I was forced to leave school while I was still in Grade 10, but and it was my love of art that pulled me through the tough time,” says Dube.

He says when he was discharged from hospital he was told he could not go back to school and his teachers recommended he go to college.

Since he loved doing art more, he ended up not going to college and believes this was the best thing he did at the time as it helped him deal with the setback in a positive way.

Soon after he recovered, Dube opened a small class, focusing on the development of art, called Kasi Exclusive Art and Talent, to help other township children learn to draw.

He also started working with some artists in studio to create music.

“Now I am also able to help other artists who want to upgrade their art in 3D, do posters and background art. As someone who’s self taught, normally I either draw things that are in my thoughts or something I see,” says Dube.

He says his dream is to help other young people develop themselves and their art either in drawing, music or dancing.

“Since graphic design competitions are rare in our areas, I hope that through my company I can help other artists put themselves, crafts and townships on the map.

“In addition, I would love to do art shows at primary schools though this would require me to have proper equipment which is costly,” says Dube.

He says his personal goal is to one day go to school to study graphic design even though his grades are not up to standard.
