Update on the Gibela project

Last Friday, the Gibela Railway held a community engagement update meeting at the Dunnottar Ethiopian Church, to update community members on their current plans for local economic growth.

The project is set to build 600 trains and 3 600 cars in a period of 19 years.

For many locals this means job opportunities and the curbing of unemployment in the area of Kwatsaduza.

Gibela’s economic development director, Dr Buyiswa Mncono-Liwani, presented the meeting and spoke on the projects employment process.

She says the project is still in its early stages, as they are still in the site clearance stage.

“Gibela has partnered with local stakeholders, who will ensure that people from Nigel and surrounding areas know about available vacancies and the processes,” she says.

“With local non-governmental organisation’s (NGO) on board we will be able to empower local women and people living with disability.”

Job vacancies will be advertised through local mediums such as community newspapers, radio stations, community meetings and the municipality, so people are able to apply.

Liwani also highlighted the fact that Gibela will have training available for unskilled labours who want to gain skills.

“A training centre will be available on site, so unskilled and semi-skilled workers may gain more skills in their different lines of work,” she adds.

“We will also be making bursaries available for those who want to further their studies.”
