Top achievers awarded

Tsakane - Zamokuhle Youth Career Centre partnered with the Mzwakhe Ngomane Leadership Institute and the Gauteng Department of Education to honour the 2015 National Senior Certificate (NSC) top achievers at the Tsakane Community Hall.

The top ten learners from circuit two in the district were, last Friday, awarded certificates for their outstanding achievements, and also given the opportunity to receive bursaries.

Chairperson of Zamokuhle Youth Career Centre, Zamokuhle Mabena, says learners need to be acknowledged for their hard work, and given opportunities, as some of them don’t have the finances to further their studies.

“With these awards, we aim to motivate matric learners to do well and continue to be committed to furthering their studies.

“We have invited tertiary institutions to exhibit courses they are offering and also inform matrics about bursary opportunities,” says Mabena.

Mabena adds that, as an organisation that promotes youth development and education, Zamokuhle Youth Career Centre doesn’t agree with school leavers taking gap years after completing their NSC.

“When learners take gap years, many get discouraged and don’t want to go back to school to further their studies, hence as we try and assist them with career guidance and applying for bursaries,” he says.

Njabulo Makathini, who passed his NSC, says it’s commendable that the Zamokuhle Youth Career Centre is honouring matric learners and motivating them to go to school as many young people are discouraged because of the unemployment rate.

“We are happy that such opportunities are given to us and we are motivated to go and start a career even though it is tough because of financial issues,” says Makathini.
