WATCH: Restoring order in school

Tsakane – With the aim of creating a cleaner and safer learning environment for all, a school search was conducted at the JE Malepe High School this morning (Tuesday).

Various stakeholders who were involved in the operation included the EMPD, Tsakane SAPS, Ekurhuleni Peace Cops, Community Patrollers, Community Policing Forum and Victim Empowerment Centre.

Learners were searched along with the classrooms, toilets and school bags, and numerous cigarettes, dagga, nyaope and matches and were confiscated from them.

Tsakane SAPS spokesperson Capt Petros Mabuza says they usually conduct these searches at secondary schools and what they normally find is dagga, cigarettes and nyaope.

“These items cause problems in our schools, as learners end up disrupting the process of teaching and learning, and sometimes conflicts arise among the teachers and learners due to substance usage by children,” he explains.

“For this reason, we make these searches surprise visits, where only the principal may knows we are going to the school, so that no one else will expect us that day.

“This initiative helps us, because at least the children will be clean and not distracted for the day, as they never know when we will come and they become afraid of bringing these things to school.”

According to school principal Walter Mashigo, this is not the first time a search has been conducted at their school and they are happy it went well.

“This initiative assists us and serves as a deterrent for learners, so that they don’t bring substances and dangerous weapons to the school,” he says.
