Local hairstylists given a chance

Tsakane - Map-Cu It and Umvumbululo Enterprise have partnered to give salon owners and hairstylists in Kwatsaduza an opportunity to do a trade test, which will allow them many opportunities in the hair industry.

A trade test is an assessment test which hairstylists take in front of a panel of judges, who score them on different categories and abilities.

After passing the trade test the stylist receives a Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) accredited certificate, which stipulates that they are professional stylists in Afro hair.

Mape Mhlambi, founder of Map-Cu It says many salon owners and stylist in the community are practicing without qualifications, which hinders them from growing in the hair industry.

“As a salon owner and a professional hairstylist who has over two decades of experience, I wanted to educate and grow the hair industry, because it is one of the oldest black business in the community,” he says.

“It is time it is taken seriously and taken to another level.”

Mhlambi wants to take as many stylists as possible to undergo their trade test and, upon going for the assessment, he will give them training and help them, so they are ready for the trade test.

Oupa Mqoma, a professional hairstylist, says it is very beneficial for a stylist to take this test, because it opens many other doors.

“Experience alone is no longer enough in this industry; a stylist should learn more about chemicals and how to treat different textures of hair,” he advises.

“Passing a trade test will expose a stylist to another side of hairstyling and care.”
