Bad stench in Mangubeni Street

Tsakane - Residents of Extension Eight, in Tsakane, have had to endure the bad stench given off by water coming from a burst sewer pipe, exposing them to human waste.

Five houses have flooded, making it difficult for residents to move around their yards.

According to residents in Mangubeni Street, this is not the first time they are experiencing this problem.

“We had this problem a few months ago and the municipality came to fix it, but a few weeks later it started again,” says resident Christina Sithole.

The residents who are affected by this problem are unable to use their own toilets and have to go to neighbours to ease themselves.

“Our toilets are flooded and this has caused so many pests and insects; we fear for our health and the safety of the children in the area, because they drink and play with the dirty and unhygienic water,” says Sithole.

Residents claim they have reported the matter to the municipality and are still waiting for them to send people to attend to the problem.

DA ward councillor Phyllis Masemola says these conditions are appalling and no person should have to live in such a mess for more than one day.

“Something needs to be done before residents contract any diseases,” she adds.

Ward councillor Annah Mnguni says she wasn’t aware of the problem, as no resident alerted her to the issue.

“I will immediately attend to the problem, as it is not healthy for any person to live in such conditions,” she says.

“Residents should notify us, as community leaders, about such issues, so we can reach the necessary departments to come and sort out the problem.”
