Avoid withdrawing large sums of money

Kwatsaduza – The police are urging stokvel groups to be extra cautious during the festive season, as the time has come for most of them to share their annual savings.

This comes after a group of women from Payneville were recently robbed of about R23 000, which they were about to share at one of their homes, after having withdrawn it from the bank.

“A stokvel group of women withdrew about R23 000 that they had put away in the bank for the year and, shortly after they had gathered at one home to share the money, two intruders came in and robbed them at gunpoint.

“It is not yet known from where the robbers got the information, on where the women would be sharing their money, but it is suspected that one of the group members might have leaked it,” says Springs police communications officer Capt Johannes Ramphora.

No arrests had been made at the time of publishing, but a case of house robbery has been opened at the Springs Police Station.

Ramphora adds that, since there are a lot of people who go to the Springs CBD to withdraw their group savings, salaries or bonus money, the police are pleading with everyone to rather transfer the money to other accounts or to swipe their card to be safer.

“It is sad to hear of such cases, so people should really take serious safety measures, because these thieves can even tamper with the ATMs,” he says.
