Celebrating the history of White City Jabavu

KwaThema – The White City Jabavu the Re-Birth organisation hosted a 60 year birthday celebration for the White City Jabavu area in KwaThema on Saturday.

Celebrations were hosted at the Mokoena Park, formerly known as Emlotheni.

Chairperson of the organisation, Mandla Phakathi, says celebrating the 60 years of White City Jabavu in KwaThema was a big success, as this forms part of the organisation’s heritage programme.

“This was the first event of its kind in the area, where people celebrated their history, heritage, origins and success stories.

“Our community supported the event to show the pride they have of the history of this place.

“This was great to see because, while doing our research, we came to a realise that White City has, over the years, produced more legends and pioneers than any other section in the province and that alone is the pride of our area,” he says.

The Ward 79 Councillor Ivy Nkosi gave an inspiring speech on the day, calling all the sections of the ward to unite in the development of the area and in fighting against drugs.

The SAPS also called on all community members to unite with the police in the fight against crime.

The EMPD called for a stop of police killings and encouraged residents to build healthy relationships with law enforcement officers, so that they can fight crime together.

Children enjoyed entertainment on the day and various artists gave performances for the older crowd.

Caswell Gxowa, president of the Caswell Stop Abuse initiative, also addressed the crowd and encouraged the big five (EMPD, SAPS, White City Jabavu the Re-Birth, Caswell Stop Abuse and the Justice System) to form a strong relationship to work together for the progress of the community.

He also introduced a door-to-door campaign against abuse which will soon be introduced in the area.

Phakathi and his team thank everyone who supported the event and who helped make the day possible.
