Empowering locals with computer lessons

KwaThema – In support of women's empowerment, the Ithuteng Information Technology Centre hosted a certificate awards ceremony for its computer students recently.

The celebration was held on Saturday at the New Life Family Church in Rest in Peace.

Founder of the centre, Musa Ngobese, says issuing of certificates comes after 45 of their students completed a one month course, to empower them with the Intel Easy Step Programme.

“This is an initiative that we run monthly, free of charge, to empower our African people as nowadays one needs to have computer skills, which a lot of our people do not have.

“Hence you find that some of them end up with a fear of working with computers, because they don’t know how to use them.

“We would like to congratulate all our students who were able to complete the course and who are proud of what they have achieved. Thank you to our two special guests Phindile Hlongwane from Sithuthukisa Isizwe Place of Safety and Tshepiso Sibanda from the National Youth Development Agency for supporting our event,” says Ngobese.

One of the young women who attended the course was Gugu Duze (18) who says it was a great experience for her, and that the tutors were very patient and helpful.

She adds that apart from learning about computer skills, she appreciates that she was able to learn more about working with other people, and empowerment of women, as they were able to share ideas.

Duduzile Mzizi says she was happy with the skills she gained because now she more knowledge of Microsoft Office, Internet, word processing and email usage.

Mzizi adds that though this was an intro to computer skills, next year they will continue doing other programmes which will hopefully help them in the workplace.
