Giving hope to drug addicts

KwaThema - Cross Musiq Youth Empowerment will host a fun-filled Stop Nyaope Campaign and Fun Day this weekend, to raise awareness of drug abuse and to promote upcoming artists.

According to event organisers, this will be a picnic with entertainment and other fun activities, while the issue of nyaope is examined.

“There will be entertainment to showcase the talent of upcoming artists, poetry, DJs, house and hip hop performing artists and dancers,” says Nkululeko Gugushe.

“We will also have a motivational talk by Innocent Ximba, our own professional speaker from KwaThema, as we want young people to know that they can be successful and that there are options available to them.

”Through this we hope to motive our fallen brothers and sisters who are using drugs.”

This is the first time the team will be hosting such an event, but they say they will be doing it more frequently, at different locations; they are currently targeting young people from Barcelona Extensions Two and Three.

Muzi Khathide says nyaope is a serious problem in the community and increases the rate of crime, however, young people are starting activities that will influence them positively, by putting all the sports facilities they have in the area to good use.

Ditshego Moreko adds that, through this, they want to show drug addicts that there are other options instead of drugs and, as a team, they are working on getting help for those who want to recover.

“We will identify those needing help and try to help them while also encouraging those that haven’t started using drugs to not even try them; as young people, take charge and change your kasi,” says Moreko.

The event will start at 11am and run until late at the KwaThema Extension Two grounds, in September Street.
