A new clinic for Daveyton

Daveyton – On Tuesday the mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubelele and Gold One officially opened the Daveyton East Clinic in celebration of World Aids Day in Daveyton.

The R25-million extension to the Daveyton East Medical Clinic was built by Gold One as part of the Modder East Operations’ social and labour plan commitment to the South African Department of Mineral Resources.

“We appreciate the dedication and sponsorship from the mining group that has made this opening of the clinic possible and accessible to the community of Daveyton,” says Gungubele.

“As a mining company I believe it’s important for us to invest in our employees and the communities within which we operate.

“It’s an honour to be involved in the improvement of the Daveyton East Clinic which will now make not just HIV/Aids care, but various types of healthcare more available to the members of the Daveyton and surrounding communities, where the majority of our employees reside,” says Chief Operations Officer of Gold One, Izak Marais.

The health care centre is said to provide basic healthcare services to more than 8 000 patients a month with the support of approximately 70 nursing staff.

This state-of-the-art clinic is divided into three primary units for acute medical care, care for mothers and infants and care for chronic conditions such as HIV/Aids and diabetes.

“With all the basic health services rendered here in this clinic, residents should come and get tested for HIV/Aids so they may get treatment if needs be.

“We cannot beat the fight against HIV/Aids if people don’t know their HIV status,” says Gungubele.

He emphasised that communities should start protecting themselves by practising safe sex rather than relying on treatment.

“It is imperative that we educate our children about this dread disease that is killing our nation, since we are celebrating World Aids Day, we should not forget about educating the young ones,” he says.

Ward councillor Kholiswa Badela thanked the community for coming to witness the opening of the clinic that will serve them.

“We are grateful as local leaders that our community will have a health facility that will ensure basic health services to a large number of patients on a day to day basis,” says Badela.
