Commemorating World AIDS Day

Tsakane - World AIDS Day is annually observed on December 1 and is used as an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS and to show support for people living with the disease while also remembering all who have died from it.

For this reason, the Tsakane Love Life team conducted an awareness campaign on the epidemic at the Calcot Dhlephu Clinic on Tuesday.

According to Love Life’s Lebogang Mogagabe, the purpose of the event was to educate the community how to prevent HIV/AIDS and to encourage people to talk about their status.

People were also advised that they should go for regular HIV/AIDS tests and the importance of knowing their status and practicing safe sex.

“We are encouraging the youth to use contraceptives, have one partner and not to be scared to go for HIV/AIDS tests. As Love Life, we are still saying that if young people want to make a difference in their community and fight against this disease, then it is never too late to join the organisation,” says Mogagabe.

“We encourage also those that are HIV negative to keep it that way by practicing safe sex and for those that are HIV positive to look after their health, live a healthy lifestyle and also to practice safe sex.”

Mogagabe says the clinic staff thanks all the community members who supported them and the organisations that attended the event including the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Earth Life, Brightspark LGBTI and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).

The team will continue during this month with their condom distribution campaign at various areas in Tsakane.
