Strong winds damage roof

KwaThema – The roof of a house in Maropeng Street, KwaThema, was damaged during a windstorm last Tuesday.

According to home owner Meshack Mohono (69), he was watching television with his wife Elizabeth (65) at about 8pm when the incident happened.

“We heard strong winds and did not take much notice of it, but within minutes the zinc sheet roofing had blown off.

“It also left some of the electrical wires exposed which resulted in no power in most of the house,” says Mohono.

He adds that neighbours came out to help and fortunately no one was injured.

“Four out of six rooms were without power

“And four and a half rooms had no roof. Luckily, however, the ceiling of the entire house was not damaged.

“The house almost burnt down as we could smell the electrical wires burning, so we had to switch off all the power in the house.

“Now we just pray and hope it doesn’t rain till this matter is sorted out,” Mohono adds.

Ward councillor Thoko Radebe visited the family to offer support and check whether personnel from Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services had visited the family.

They had not at the time of publication.

The family was told they would receive a covering for the house, as well as a food parcel.

Mohono says they are still waiting for inspectors to evaluate the damage but that they will have to make a plan before it rains.
