Become a facilitator

Nthabiseng Ngwenya (53) is an education facilitator at the Department of Education's East District.

Before becoming a Life Orientation (LO) facilitator, Ngwenya was a biology and guidance teacher at Pholong Secondary School in KwaThema.

She says one should have experience in the area they will be facilitating.

“I was a guidance teacher for 23 years, before I became a LO facilitator at the district.

I have first-hand experience in the education field, making my job easy because I have a clear understanding of teaching” says Ngwenya.

Ngwenya holds an M.Ed. degree from the University of Johannesburg and is currently studying towards her PhD.

She says being a facilitator requires someone who has a passion for education and understands teaching.

Being a facilitator also means you are constantly travelling to different schools.

“I travel a lot, going to different schools to monitor educators who are implementing the curriculum stipulated by the department and to check the learners’ performance,” says Ngwenya.

There are facilitators for all learning areas in primary and high schools who visit the schools from time to time.

She describes her job as very challenging at times, especially when learners are not doing well or an educator is failing to teach learners.

Ngwenya advises young people who have an interest in facilitating to take teaching as a career and then diverge into facilitating.
