Women helped into the IT age

KwaThema - Last Saturday, 200 local women received certificates for completing the Intel Easy Step Programme, which was offered by the Ithuteng Information Technology Centre and Siyafunda Organisation.

The programme runs for two weeks, during which young and old women are taught basic computer skills, which they can use to find employment.

According to Musa Ngobese (27), founder of IITC, he partnered with Siyafunda because they deal with women empowerment and he came to the realisation that most women in the community are not computer literate.

“It was alarming when most women came to the centre requesting basic computer skills; that is when I began talks with Siyafunda, so we help women get basic computer skills at no charge,” says Ngobese.

“He adds that this lack could be one of the reasons some people don’t find employment, because computer skills are a basic requirement for most jobs nowadays.”

The programme resumed in February and will end next year, in June. Women in the community are, thus, still welcome to register to be a part of the programme.

Next year men will also be involved in the programme, but the two organisations first concentrated on empowering women.

“Many males asked why they are not part of the programme, so we have decided that next year all will be welcome to take part,” Ngobese explains.
