Street traders informed of trading by-laws

Kwatsaduza – Several departments of the Ekurhuleni Metro took to the streets last Friday to educate hawkers on their responsibilities as street traders.

These entrepreneurs were also informed of the rules that they should operate under.

According to the EMPD spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago, departmental representatives worked with the metro police in this initiative.

Kgasago adds that there were various violations of bylaws that were discussed with the traders, including:

n Putting up stands with their goods, on the pavements which makes it difficult for pedestrians to navigate the sidewalk forcing them to walk in the road.

n Hawkers taking up a space far greater than what is allowed.

n Leaving the places or sites they sell from dirty.

Hawkers that are not complying with by-laws, were also given warnings and a period of seven days to fix the identified issues they have. Should they fail to do this, Kgasago says they will be brought to book.

He emphasises that these areas will be visited again to ensure that the street traders are following the laws that govern trade.
