Ikageng empowers local women

Kwatsaduza – The Ikageng Women’s Club gathered for their annual conference in Springs over the weekend to celebrate 50 years of women empowerment in the community.

During this celebration, the women held motivation talks, prayers, business seminars and looked at ways to improve the club.

“This is not a political organisation, but a club founded on a vision of removing women from just idling around the townships and for them to find ways of serving the community.

“And over the years this has been done following the motto ‘By Faith and Hope We Shall Prosper’.

“The then founders wanted to make sure that they changed the lives of women in the community for the better and not just by assisting with burials, but by having projects to empower them,” says the national president of the group, Nokufa Radebe.

She adds that the group does not shut anyone out as they have professionals, unemployed women and even those who are dealing with projects in their communities.

She says the club comprises of various branches in different provinces and as a result, all these different groups have different projects they are involved with in order to give back to their communities.

“We have projects where we assist the needy with clothing, have a home that cares for the old and the sick, and give food donations, among other things.

“Our aim is to eliminate the element of dependency for women.

“We further have days that are important to the club which we celebrate, such as Thanksgiving, Founders Day and our annual conference, which keep us rooted in the history of the club,” she adds.

Radeba states that they have started to bring younger women on board since the club also address challenges faced by women of all ages, such as inequality, poverty and unemployment.

During the celebrations, the women held a candle lighting ceremony and prayed for those affected by HIV/Aids and cancer .

Former president and current advisor to the club, Hariet Mokoena, says this is a community-based organisation that helps people who are struggling in any way.

She adds that a lot of positive things have come out of the formation of this group.
