Mayor launches Clean City Campaign

Tsakane – Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele and the minister of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, put aside their fancy gear and got their hands dirty, cleaning illegal dumping sites in Tsakane on Saturday.

This formed part of the launch of the new Ekurhuleni Clean City Campaign, which was formally launched at the Tsakane Stadium,.

Gungubele says that in pursuit of a cleaner city, the campaign will see the 4 000 strong Clean City Brigade deployed across the region to continue with the work that was started over the weekend.

He adds that the Clean City Brigade will be custodians of the programme, and its members are expected to lead by example in keeping the city clean.

In addition to this, the recruits will be shown how to turn trash into cash as they will be trained on how to recycle and further be exposed to business opportunities in the environmental, waste management and eco-business sectors.

The mayor also declared that for the next nine months, every last Friday of the month will be an Ekurhuleni Cleaning Day where communities are called to do their bit in eliminating dirt by cleaning their surrounds.

Gungubele emphasises that it is imperative for residents to remember that rubbish is a health hazard to human beings and it has negative effects on the environment.

The mayor, minister and other senior officials from the Ekurhuleni Metro sealed the launch of the campaign by signing a pledge committing themselves to keeping the city clean.
