Hawks arrest Dunnottar policeman for conspiracy

A 30-year-old policeman briefly appeared in the Nigel Magistrate's Court today, for his role in the attack at the Dunnottar Police Station on June.

It was the suspect’s first court appearance and the case has been postponed for his bail application to November 5.

He has not been asked to plead and can therefore not be named at this stage.

He was arrested at the Dunnottar Police Station, where he is employed, at about 11am on Tuesday.

Hawks spokesman Lt Robert Netshiunda says the policeman conspired with three armed suspects to rob the police station on June 8 where an on-duty police officer was shot eight times and spent over two months in hospital.

“The motive behind the attack was to steal firearms and commit armed robberies in Mpumalanga,” says Netshiunda.

In July three suspects were arrested in KwaThema and confessed that they were assured by the suspect that a female sergeant would be on duty and the suspect would be on patrol duty outside the police station.

Netshiunda says the woman called in sick, and two policeman were placed on duty in the Client Service Centre (charge office) on the evening of the attack.

On the evening of the attack, the three men entered the charge office and opened fire, injuring the 47-year-old officer.

The second officer escaped unharmed.

A shoot-out took place between the men and the officer and the shooters fled the scene on foot.

The officer was shot several times in the upper body.

“Retrieved telephone conversations have linked the constable with the three suspects,” says Netshiunda.

The three suspects will appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on November 13, while the policeman will appear in court on November 5.
