GDE is ready for finals

Kwatsaduza – The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says it is ready to administer this year’s final National Senior Certificate Examinations.

In a media statement, the department says that exams will be effectively managed by the districts and capably monitored by the Provincial Monitoring Team.

This year, the department has a total of 954 centres that are registered to administer these exams and of these centres, at least 640 are public schools while 234 are independent centres.

It has registered 112 050 full-time and 38 628 part-time candidates who will sit to write their finals.

The department has also trained and officially appointed chief invigilators for all 954 schools to administer the exams and all districts have completed the training of invigilators, conducted by the chief invigilators and district officials

“To ensure that the integrity and credibility of the examination is not compromised, a state of readiness visit has been conducted at all 15 districts, to establish the state of security in all districts.

“High security measures, which include installed security cameras and foolproof strong rooms for the storage of question papers have been implemented in all storage areas.

“Thirteen of the 15 districts will store exam materials in their premises, whilst two districts will store in the provincial premises,” says the GDE.

Centralised marking will take place as from November 29 to December 14, at 10 marking venues and an additional marking session will be introduced from November 17 to 25 as there are significant shortages of markers in English home language, English first additional language, Afrikaans first additional language, Afrikaans home language, religion studies and history.

The selection of markers for this year’s National Senior Certificate Examinations, commenced on 17 August and was concluded on September 4, while the training of chief markers and internal moderators is taking place between October 17 and 24.

The national minister will release the results of the final examinations on January 5, 2016.
