Parents encouraged to register child soon after birth

Kwatsaduza – Home Affairs spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete has reiterated the words of minister Malausi Gigaba, saying parents should register the birth of their child as soon as possible, as the department continues with its plans to tighten laws on late registrations.

Tshwete says it is imperative for all children born in South Africa to be registered within 30 days of their birth (in terms of the Births and Death Registration Act, of 1992), by a parent or parents, guardian, or any other person legally responsible for the child.

“This can be done at health facilities that have Home Affairs offices or at any Department of Home Affairs offices.

“One can apply at their nearest Home Affairs office, where their biometric (measure of human features, such as fingers and eyes in order to identify people) information will be verified.

“You will need your ID book or ID books of both parents, as well as your child’s ID number, and parents and guardians should bear in mind that all documents submitted must be originals or certified copies,” adds Tshwete.

An unabridged birth certificate will cost you about R75.

Tshwete says details of stringent measures to be applied for failure to register the birth of a child within the set period will be announced in due course.
