Construction of fire station on track

KwaThema - Work at the new KwaThema Fire Station, situated on the corner of Kgaswane and Moshoeshoe streets, continues and progress is being made.

These were the words of Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson, William Ntladi.

He says contractors were first appointed on October 29, 2013, and began construction of the station in November that year.

On the basis of non-performance, however, the contract was terminated.

A new contractor was then appointed on June 20, 2014, to continue with work as of July 2.

“The project is currently at 65% into its construction phase.

“Features the station will comprise of include a guard house, gym facility, three machine bays and one wash bay, laundry facility and the normal administrative section,” says Ntladi.

He adds that 22 local job opportunities were created by this project and that the planned completion date is March 2016.

The community liaison officer on site, Meriam Mohono, says: “Brick work is done, the retaining wall is being done, workers are busy with levels of paving and installing aluminium window frames and the plastering of the wall is in progress.

“Some of the things we are still busy with include stormwater channels, electricity and plumbing, grease traps, the erection of timber trusses on the guard house and trails for air conditioners.

“People of KwaThema have been serviced by the fire station in Sharon Park, so this station will make things better as it is closer to them,” says Mohono.

The African Nation Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) ward 78 branch say that they are happy with the development of this project as they initiated it.

“This is part of our integrated development plan and we are pleased as the project has been able to create employment for locals who are unemployed.

“Thank you to our government for hearing our needs,” says deputy chairperson of the ward 78 Margaret Gazo ANCWL branch, Zanele Nyakale.
