Fun walk promotes healthy living

Duduza – To promote a healthy lifestyle in the community, the Sonqoba Simunye Men’s Burial Club hosted an 8km fun walk for locals.

Several burial clubs and both young and old community members were present to support this initiative.

The age groups, 50 years and up, 35 to 49 years and 18 to 34 years, registered and started the walk at the Zamani Park robots near the Duduza Police Station.

The walkers then turned right into Selepe Street, proceeded to Delange Road and then turned left towards the robots at Extension 15. Walkers continued with Mandela Drive and back towards the robots where the race began.

Mantshadi Magabe (62) says she took part in the walk as she wants to be more active. “Since I am used to walking, the distance was not bad for me. Thank you to Sonqoba for making this great day possible and fun even for us as seniors.”

Paul Moloko (62) says that he enjoys keeping fit and most of the time he avoids taking a taxi just so that he can walk.

“I also wanted to see if I could do it and am proud that I have. I was in the top five in my age group and really loved the experience. Other seniors should stop saying they are old, and participate in these events so we can all try to keep fit and healthy,” he explained.

Luzuko Ntissa (40) took the first position in his age group.

He says he is a road runner and has entered the Comrades Marathon six times. For him, this was a way of giving back and showing his support for the community. Ntissa says he was glad he attended the walk with his wife and three children.

Segopotso Sehune (14) says the distance was far but the walk was fun.

All participants were rewarded with medals and the top performers in each age group received additional prizes.
