Armed robbery suspects to appear in court again

Tsakane – A man (39) and a woman (33) who were arrested for armed robbery on Wednesday, September 3, at about 11.30 am, in Tsakane Extension 11, remain in police custody after appearing in the Tsakane Magistrates Court on September 25.

Their case has been remanded to October 7, when they will appear again for their bail application.

According to Tsakane police spokesman Capt Petros Mabuza, the two suspects were arrested after they pretended to be Eskom employees who were checking house meters.

“The suspects allegedly produced a firearm – which was a toy – and robbed a woman of R70 000, which is money that was contributed on a monthly basis for a stokvel.

“The owner of the house then screamed for help and the community came to her rescue, catching the two suspects with the safe that held the money in their possession.

“It is alleged that the information about the money was given to the two suspects by one of the members of the same stokvel,” says Mabuza.

He warns that residents should ensure that they don’t keep large sums of money on them or in their homes.

“They should also avoid withdrawing large amounts of money, especially when they are alone, but must ask three or four other members of the stokvel to escort them,” he adds.

“The Tsakane SAPS has a safe place at the station where stokvel members can share their money; just contact me on 082 331 9079 to arrange the date and time.”
