Young cartoonist aims high

Tsakane -Cartoonist Edward Masilela’s (23) dream is to own his own comic book publishing company.

The talented final year graphic design student says he lives, breathes and eats drawing.

“When other people are sleeping, I’m drawing and when my peers are having fun, I’m drawing,” says Masilela.

He says his love for drawing was inspired by his uncle who used to draw and since he was introduced to drawing as a youngster, Masilela’s passion for the art has blossomed.

Masilela explains that drawing for him is a means of communicating with other people.

“I express myself a lot through my drawings and whenever I see something that appeals to me I go home and draw it. If there is one thing I want to do for the rest of my life it’s to draw all the beauty I see on a daily basis,” he says.

The young artist’s work featured in a local magazine where he had a comic strip and he says it did extremely well.

“Readers were impressed by my work and that showed me that I’m on the right track and should not let go of my dream,” says Masilela.

He says the one person he aspires to be like is Alex Ross, one of the best comic book artists in the world.

Masilela admits that it’s not an easy industry to break into as it requires a lot of hard work and determination.

“I will continue to knock on doors until I’m recognized for my artistic work.”
