Etwatwa says no to violence

Daveyton - Residents of Etwatwa voiced their concerns about gangsterism and community violence during a march recently.

Community leaders and residents marched from the Etwatwa Sports Grounds to the police station to deliver a memorandum.

Etwatwa has been gripped by violence over the past two weeks with three teenage boys ‘necklaced’ to death and another fighting for his life in hospital.

Residents, who are fed up with the violence that has claimed young lives, want to restore calm to their community.

The march was also an awareness campaign against police killings, women abuse and substance abuse.

Spokesperson for the EMPD, Clifford Shongwe, says the march aims to give residents hope and an understanding that police are doing their best to restore peace in the community.

“It’s important that members of the community feel safe in their community and can work with police to curb crime,” says Shongwe.

A march also took place in Daveyton at the Sinaba Stadium, where community members also delivered a memorandum to the Daveyton Police Station.

“Our children deserve to live in a crime-free community, we are saying no to violence and gangsterism now,” commented one of the marching residents.
