Springs police spokesman, Capt Johannes Ramphora, says the driver and the passenger were going to collect one of their co-workers, when they were attacked along Wellem Street.
While waiting for the co-worker, the pair was approached by three unknown suspects, who shot at the driver through the window of the vehicle.
The passenger then jumped out of the car and the suspects disarmed the driver.
The suspects then fled the scene.
The passenger was able to go back to the car, move the driver to the passenger seat and drive the injured man to the Far East Hospital for treatment.
Afterwards he returned to the scene and called the police.
When the police arrived, they found broken glass and blood.
The victim is still in hospital and police are investigating cases of attempted murder and robbery.
