Community educated about divorce

KwaThema - The Caswell Abuse Movement (CSAM) held a workshop on Friday at the KwaThema Magistrate Court to raise awareness and shed light on the many factors that contribute to divorce.

CSAM sought to educate people through a workshop that allowed divorcees to share their experiences and concerns about the divorce laws in the country.

“As a divorcee myself I know that the law sometimes fails to see factors that lead to divorce and judgement is not always fair,”says Caswell Gxowa (49), the founder of CSAM.

Local pastors and elders of the community were present to share their views and to suggest how culture, religion and the law may deal with divorce fairly.

Amos Shabalala (62), an elder in the community, says divorce in the black community was seen as taboo but now black people feel comfortable to divorce.

He feels the issue of culture also becomes a challenge when two people want to separate.

“Religion, law and culture should all be taken into account when people are separating so matters can reach an amicable stance because lawfully the divorce may be finalised, but culturally it may not, and this creates unnecessary problems within families, says Shabalala.
