Cancer survivor flies to Beijing

Josey Nonkonyana (64), from Sharon Park, is a cancer survivor and she will be flying to Beijing on September 4.

Nonkonyana survived breast, bone and liver cancer and is now living a healthy life.

She is the founder of the Reach for Recovery support group for breast cancer in Ekurhuleni.

The support group which she started in 2009 has helped many breast cancer patients to live and deal with cancer.

Following her hard work of counselling and motivating patients with cancer and encouraging women to be tested for breast cancer, Nonkonyana has been nominated to represent South Africa at an international breast cancer support conference, to be held in Beijing.

She says the three-day conference will discuss symptoms and other issues about breast cancer and give advice to the delegates on how to fight against the disease.

“I hope to learn more about the disease and hear about the challenges and the experiences with which other countries are faced,” says Nonkonyana.

She adds that, after returning from the conference, she will continue to encourage cancer patients and survivors to educate other women about breast cancer and also motivate them to be tested for the disease.

“Women need to stand together, educate others and share their experiences about the disease,” Nonkonyana concludes.
