Students gain experience at construction site

KwaThema - The upgrading of Selope Thema Clinic in KwaThema, which is currently underway, brings hope to residents of the township.

The local facility is situated in KwaThema Extension Three and work to upgrade the clinic started two months ago.

The project has created employment for 10 residents of KwaThema.

To ensure more community involvement in the construction, the constructor on site has given six young people, who study civil engineering and building sciences at the Ekurhuleni East College, the opportunity to gain experience.

“The students will be with us for 18 months until they gain the work experience they need in order to complete their studies,” says manager Tiisang Makau.

According to ward councillor for the area, Wilson Busakwe, the clinic, which is one of those experiencing overcrowding, is expected to be complete in the next 18 months.

Busakwe is delighted the constructor also cares about the education of young people in the township.

“The bright future of the youth depends on their level of education,” says Busakwe.

He encourages the youth to get education as this is the weapon to be used in the fight against poverty and unemployment.

One of the students on the site, Confidence Tladi, says since they started working on August 11, they are learning more and more about the job on a daily basis.

She says they appreciate the opportunity the constructor has given them.
