The shooting happened on Saturday at 6am along Welgedacht Road.
Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the victim was on his way to work when he was approached by two suspects.
The suspects demanded cash and a cellphone from the victim who tried to run away from them.
Ramphora says the suspects opened fire on him, shot him in the back and fled the scene.
The victim was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for treatment.
No arrests have been made but Springs police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
