Sewer poses danger

Geluksdal - Elizabeth Moagi (44), a resident of Extension Three, is living with an unconnected sewage system, leaving waste to spill over into a water stream behind her house.

Since moving into her RDP home last year Moagi has had to endure the smell of waste coming from her toilet.

“I reported the problem to the ward councillor and the municipality when I first moved in but till today nothing has been done about the problem,” says Moagi.

She worries that the bad stench may be dangerous to inhale over a long period of time.

Her neighbours also complain that the waste is giving off a bad odour and that it is unsafe for children to play around her yard.

Vusi Masemola (45), a resident, says he is afraid that children may fall into the polluted water stream. “We are not always there to monitor where our children are playing and we fear they will play with the waste and get sick,” says Masemola.

Moagi says all she wants is to have a sewage system properly fitted to her house. She can’t open her windows because of the stench and in summer the problem worsens with flies and all sort of insects flying around her yard.

Ward councillor Claud Mabasa could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
