Nkumbulo Secondary School receives a helping hand
KwaThema - Members of the community, Ekurhuleni ANC and the ANC Selope Thema Zone cleaned Nkumbulo Secondary School on Saturday.
Led by the chairman of the Ekurhuleni ANC, Mzwandile Masina, the group braved the cold weather to complete the clean-up of the school.
Gift Mashiya, the zonal secretary, says they cleaned and painted 21 classrooms, fixed the school’s plumbing and donated sanitary towels, gardening tools, seeds and school uniforms to more than 50 learners.
Mashiya hopes the donation of school uniforms will encourage learners to take their education seriously regardless of their family backgrounds.
“We understand that there are learners who miss school because they do not have sanitary towels and better school uniforms,” said Mashiya.
The Ekurhuleni ANC has adopted the school to ensure a higher pass rate of Grade 12 learners.
Mashiya explained that the adoption of the school follows the school’s low pass rate in 2014.
“We want to ensure an increase in this year’s pass rate by being there for the school and providing them with all the help that they need,” he said.
Nonhlanhla Mthembu-Dlamini, a mother of one of the matric pupils, applauded the clean-up operation.
She says learners need to know that the community and the politicians care about their education. She believes that a clean environment in school will motivate learners and ensure they concentrate better.
“Education is everyone’s responsibility,” said Mthembu-Dlamini, who also encouraged the school’s matric pupils to spend more time focusing on their school work in order to have excellent results at the end of the year.
