Youth draw inspiration from Madiba

Kwatsaduza - The youth are eager to spend their 67 minutes for Mandela Day helping different organisations.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated annually in honour of the former president.

It is commemorated on July 18, Mandela’s birthday.

The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009 with the first UN Mandela Day held on July 18, 2010.

A group of young people from the Tsakane Youth Development Programme (TYDP) will spend the day with senior citizens at the Tsakane Old Age Home.

Pule Moloi, TYDP managing director, says the organisation wants to ensure their 67 minutes is spent in a way that will change someone’s life.

He says the day is also an opportunity for the youth to learn from Madiba’s example.

“Mandela was not a selfish person, he always thought about the citizens of this country,” says Pule.

Another young person from Duduza, Sibonelo Dlamini (17) says he will celebrate the day with aspiring soccer stars from the township.

“I believe talent needs to be polished at a young age so it can shine tomorrow,” he says.

Ntombi Ndlela (25) from KwaThema will celebrate the day by visiting the KwaThema Old Age Home and help clean the centre.
