Newborn rescued from bin

Daveyton - A newborn baby girl was rescued from a dustbin by a local police officer.

WO Solwayo Kubheka, who was off duty, was driving along Mahlobo Street on Sunday with his wife, when he was stopped by a group of people.

The group informed Kubheka about a blood-stained blanket in the dustbin.

The police officer stopped and he and his wife went to investigate.

They were shocked to find a baby wrapped inside the blanket.

According to Daveyton police spokesman Sgt Constance Moalusi, the baby was rushed to the Daveyton Clinic and was later transferred to the Far East Rand Hospital.

Moalusi says the infant is now under social workers' care and is healthy and strong.

Police are investigating a case of concealment of birth and no arrests have been made.
